BrickHouse Books (formerly New Poets Series, Inc.) is Maryland’s oldest continuously operating small press. Founded in 1970, with Clarinda Harriss as its editor since 1973, BrickHouse publishes works of poetry, fiction, drama, or artistic nonfiction. We are always looking for submissions of excellent, fresh, nontrendy, literate, intelligent material in any form or style. Our usual press run is 100-1,200 copies, of which the author receives 20, along with BHB’s sales and review support. Sale proceeds go back into the corporation to finance the next BrickHouse project. Imprints

Special imprints under BrickHouse Books include New Poets Series, Stonewall, Chestnut Hills Press, and Side Streets.

New Poets Series is devoted to the publication of first books by promising poets who have never had a collection of poems of over 30 pages published.

Stonewall is dedicated to publishing poetry from an LBGTQIA+ perspective. In addition to publishing book-length manuscripts, Stonewall also runs an annual chapbook competition. The prize is publication of the chapbook.

Chestnut Hills Press is reserved strictly for the top 10 percent of manuscripts rejected by BrickHouse. It is an author-financed division devoted to those who had to be turned down due to budget constraints. It is not a vanity press. Authors cannot submit directly to Chestnut Hills Press.

Side Streets is reserved for submissions we are fascinated by but simply cannot figure out any way to categorize or even describe. Books published under this imprint may or may not be author-financed. Authors cannot submit directly to Side Streets. Stay tuned: a new publication in this category is forthcoming.
